The New Pond There is much joy when the new pond is finally finished and up and running. It takes a couple of months before the new fish can be added to it, but enjoy it before the green takes over. The algae is necessary for a balanced and clear pond, but many do not understand, and begin cleaning out the algae once it appears. Be aware there are different algaes, and what is known as "string algae" is actually a weed, and that must be removed. It is not a true algae. This is not easy to remove. It seems that whenever the pH is higher, the string algae comes back. Maintaining the pH at 8.0 to 8.2 seems to keep it under control. You do want your pond to be green with the right type of algae. It will coat the sides and bottoms of your pond. Eventually this algae will turn dark green and black.
Before fish and plants, and algae growth.
